This picture is of the property of George Carnell (1841-1925) of Carmanville. His house is the one in the middle in front of the United Church. The building behind and nearest the house was the storage and woodshed, the building behind the house and near the tree line was his barn. Those three buildings have now been torn down. However, the house in the left foreground was built in the 1890's and still exists today. The back porch was removed and moved back about 100 ft and now is a storage and wood shed. A "new" back kitchen was built with materials that came from George's house and still exists.

The house in the left foreground was built by Edward Carnell (Son of George) (1872-1900)). George was a Master Mariner. His two sons Edward and John (1876-1900) were returning from St.' John's on their schooner 'The Goodwill" with a load of supplies and ran into a storm in Hamilton Sound, just outside Carmanville harbour. The schooner was lost and the bodies were never found. A Mr.Billy Pennel of Noggin Cove said his family saw the schooner in trouble but could not help. A memorial to their memory is in the United Church cemetery at Carmanville. Edward was Married to Elizabeth Penney (1872-1944) of Indian Islands. They had three children, Frank (1896-1899), Selby Stoney (1898-1977) and Emmaline Gladys (1900-1993).
