The Lions Club of Conception Bay South was formed in February 1971 by community minded people to serve Conception Bay South. Today, on our roster of active Lions we still count three Charter members. Early in the life of our club, the Lions public speaking program for junior and senior high school students, "Lions Speak-Out" was inaugurated in Newfoundland by our club. This program has now spread to involve young people from Maine and all the Atlantic Provinces.
Over the years the C.B.S. LIONS made several large donations and hundreds of smaller ones to literacy, recreation and humanitarian projects in C.B.S., in Newfoundland, in Canada and around the world. Lions provide volunteer workers for several mobile blood donor clinics each year. A five kilometre portion of C.B.S. highway is cleaned by Lions as part of our commitment to the environment. Providing adequate, affordable housing, for residents of our community through the Lions Housing Initiative, is another major project.
Our main focus, as for all Canadian Lions Clubs, is sight and diabetes
and youth programs. The C.B.S. LIONS Club raises and donates
OVER $15,000 a year for these projects. In June of 2000, the club
held the Grand Opening of C.B.S. LIONS DEN [Designed to be the
heart of community service in the new century], at Kitty Ade's Turn in
the C.B.S. LIONS / Stoney Hill Park. Lions' membership includes
men and women from all walks of life and all areas of our community.
LIONS motto is "WE SERVE"
and all Lions in
Conception Bay South live this motto.
