SUPERSTITION AND THE BOX OF APPLES

Two thieves operated in cahoots and shared everything evenly. Their favorite site for the dividing up of the ill-gotten loot was in the graveyard

One night they stole a box of apples and went straight to the graveyard. Just as they were nearing the gate, two apples dropped from the box and rolled on the sidewalk. One thief made a motion to pock them up and the other said, "What odds about those two, there is plenty here for the two of us."

They had just started to divide up the apples when Jake heard this voice coming from the graveyard: "You take that one, I'll take this one, you take that one, I'll take this one ...."

Jake was a very supertitious fellow and he decided that this must be St. Peter and the devil dividing up the souls. So he set off in top flight to inform the bishop. The bishop agreed to go to the graveyard an sure enough the voice was saying: "you take that one, I,ll take this one ...."

It continued for another couple of minutes and then the voice said: "That's all." Just then Bishop and Jake took to their scrapers because the other thief said" "What about the two outside?"
