THE TITANIC

Here is a story right from the wharf at Come-by-Chance.

When the oil refinery was being opened at Come-by-Chance, John Shaheen chartered the Queen Elizabeth liner to bring hundreds of celebrities as guests for the official opening.

For days before the Queen Elizabeth was to arrive, the local people were referring to the liner, just in jest, as the Titanic.

The morning came for her arrival. A crowd of people were on the wharf and considerable conversation was going on about the "Titanic". A local older gentleman came down on the wharf and was not paying attention to anyone. A young man left the crowd and said to the older man,''Uncle Bill, they tells we dat d'Titanic 'as 'it a hiceberg." His reply. very abruptly, "Oh, d'ell wid 'er, we don't hown 'er.", and kept on walking.
