| Many old folk songs were brought to Newfoundland from England, Ireland and Scotland during more than three centuries of colonial growth. Apart from these is another group that had its origin in the colonies on this side of the Atlantic, and there is a third aggregation that belongs solely to Newfoundland.
It was but a natural consequence that folk songs composed in Newfoundland should have as their main theme the experience of a race that had wrested its livelihood from the sea. Occasionally there were instances of other phases of life such as love affairs, the sense of loss by a loved one, lullaby songs, and comedic situations. Now it's the 20th Century and there is a new generation of Newfoundland Music. Newfoundland artists such as Great Big Sea and Ron Hynes are finally getting their well deserved recognition throughout the rest of Canada and also the rest of the World. |
