R. Archibald Bonnell is a writer and lawyer who lives in Gander, Newfoundland. He has written extensively over a twenty year period. "The Boys of Jubilee" is his first novel and was inspired by a 1989 chance visit to the author's favourite
childhood lookout high above the valleys of Corner Brook in the beautiful Bay of Islands. The novel chronicles the Corner Brook Baronets 1963 season and their quest for the All Newfoundland Junior
Baseball Championship, a season flavoured with the coming of age romantic adventures of catcher Rory Bennett and his teammates.1
"Even in the middle of winter storms, I dreamed of green grass, the smell of leather, and the feel of baseballs."
"When they asked for catchers, I sized up the equipment and saw the authentic Rawling's mitt...beautifully moulded into a summer dream."
"I kissed her feverously as the waters gushed through the dam...The hot juices that spilled from our mouths were the very taste of youthful lust."
"Four guys in a booth sharing life. It meant something to be a Baronet...out of town heros, playing their roles like movie star rebels."
"I led her to the small pooled spring...kneeling together we saw our reflections and the sky above us."
"We went into the bottom of the ninth...down three to nothing."
I arose, touched home plate and retraced my steps across the outfield."
