St. Michael's Printshop

St. Michael's Printshop in historic St. John's, Newfoundland invites artists who share a love of printmaking to join us for an unforgettable creative adventure. Whether from Newfoundland or "from away", St. Michael's Printshop encourages serious artists to use our facilties, and to experience firsthand the spectacular beauty of this island province. For more than fifteen years the printshop has provided visiting and local artists with the working space, equipment and materials necessary for the production of their own lithographic and intaglio prints. Artists from across Canada, the United States and Europe have journeyed here to revitalize their creativity, to produce new work and to discover a uniquely different part of the world.

For a low monthly fee, artists may rent the printshop to produce their own work, with twenty-four hour access guaranteed, seven days a week. The shop is bright and spacious, with a pleasant atmosphere. It occupies 140 square metres (1500 square feet) of open working space on the second floor of what once was a sail loft. Situated next to the harbour, the shop's windows look out on Signal Hill, the Narrows and all of the maritime activity of this seaport. Equipment includes a Brand etching press with a 22" x 44" bed, a Brand lithography press with a 24" x 40" bed, an acid room, a large supply of lithographic limestones, and all of the necessary ancillary equipment. A basic inventory of materials can be purchased at the shop at cost.

Of course, St. Michael's Printshop is much more than a rental studio. Its is a nexus for printmakers and printmaking in Newfoundland. Among other activities St. Michael's Printshop organizes workshops and seminars, arranges for the display of shop produced art in public buildings, coordinates or participates in travelling exhibitions, conferences and symposia, and creates portfolios of prints for special occasions.
