Lockston Path Provincial Park

Lockston Path Provincial Park is located approximately 6 kilometers from Port Rexton on highway route 236. Comprising 733 hectares, this park was first opened to the public in 1966. Since then, the park has been upgraded to include a comfort station with modern washrooms, hot showers and laundry facilities. The park also has a sewage disposal station. This park with its sheltered campsites and freshwater beach provides a good base camp for visits to the nearby historic communities.

Natural History

Lockston Path falls within the Maritime Barrens Eco region with fir stands dominating sheltered areas and heath vegetation common in more exposed areas. The park contains a wide variety of habitats including freshwater ecosystems, bogs forested areas and barrens. Located in the heart of the Bonavista Peninsula many species of mammals found throughout the province are common here such as moose, beaver, black bear and mink. Some of the more common bird species found in the park are small woodland types such as juncos and grosbeaks. The waters of Bonavista Bay provide viewing opportunities of whales, seabirds and icebergs.

Park Activities

Camping
The park has 56 campsites with some nestled along a winding river. Each site has a picnic table, garbage can, fire place and space for your vehicle. many sites are suitable for recreational vehicles. A wheel chair accessible comfort station with laundry, shower facilities and dumping station is located near campsite 51. Drinking water taps and pit-toilets are located conveniently.

Swimming
Lockston Path Park has a large, sandy beach, located in the picnic area near the main entrance. Change houses and toilets are situated nearby. CAUTION The swimming area is unsupervised. Water safety equipment is conspicuously located on the beach.

Boating
A boat launch provides access to the waters of Freshwater Pond. Fishing, motor boating, sailing, and canoeing is popular pastimes for park visitors.

Hiking
There is a 1.7 km trail which leads from the day use parking lot to a viewpoint overlooking the park. The hiker will pass through stands of fir, spruce, birch and many species of wild flowers such as bunchberry, twinflower, and Labrador tea.

Group Camping
Lockston Path has a group camping section for organized groups. Reservations can be made by contacting the park at 464- 3553.

Places To See and Explore Close By

Use this Provincial Park as your home while you explore the surrounding area on the Discovery Trail. The community of Trinity holds the Trinity Pageant, Trinity Interpretation Center, Lester-Garland Premises, and Hiscock House. A short drive north brings you to Bonavista where you can visit the Mockbeggar Property, Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, the Ryan Property and the Dungeon Provincial Park.
