Since its founding as a professional theatre company in 1978, Rising Tide Theatre has offered audiences among the finest plays and talent available in Canada. The company has explored current and controversial issues on stage, rejuvenated and modernised classics, and created plays which seek to portray the culture and character of Newfoundland and Labrador. Rising Tide has mounted full-scale touring productions which have performed throughout the province, across Canada, and in the United Kingdom. Several productions have been televised, both provincially and nationally.
For the past three years Rising Tide has been focusing its energies on developing new and innovative works. These include workshops and productions of new plays by such Newfoundland writers as Des Walsh, Berni Stapleton and Barry Nichols. The company has also commissioned an environmental play for young people, The Land That Clean Forgot. Works in progress include research for historical/interpretative drama for certain regions of the province as well as a workshop of Kent Stetson's Harps of God, a new play about the sealing industry of Newfoundland. The fruits of this labour have been some of the most well-received and critically acclaimed works to grace the Newfoundland stage in recent memory. These works represent the union of professional artists from across the country and while remaining uniquely Newfoundland in flavour, these collaborations have produced works of broad ranging themes.
Three years ago, Rising Tide Theatre mounted The New Founde Lande in Trinity, Trinity Bay. A full scale historical pageant celebrating the province's rich and diverse history through a series of dramatised vignettes, the production draws on the talent and creativity of local residents. In 1994, Rising Tide added Summer In The Bight to its line-up in Trinity. A theatre festival that showcases the best of Newfoundland theatre. This summer the Trinity Pageant and Theatre Festival attracted audiences of more than 15, 000 people.
Rising Tide is one of the mainstays of professional theatre in Newfoundland and Labrador. The company is proud of its many achievements and proud of the many talented artists who have worked with the company since its inception in 1978. Rising Tide Theatre will continue to be a major force in the cultural and theatrical life of the province as it progresses with courage and confidence, through the nineties.
