Adolph CrantAdolph Crant

Sketching and painting have long been serious hobbies of mine. From as far back as I can remember I have always been sketching/doodling and I still do. Whenever I see a scene that strikes me in some way, I want to reproduce it as a sketch or painting

My painting started in oils but allergies forced me in other directions: I settled on watercolors. The challenge of the medium itself is a major attraction to me.

Adolph Crant at workCurrently I am retired after a life-long career in teaching and what used to be a hobby has now become (more or less) a full time occupation, a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging (and sometimes frustrating) one.

I was born in Gaultois on Newfoundland's South-West Coast and from a very early age I was struck visually by the rugged terrain, the isolated (at that time) coastal villages and the ever-changing face of the sea in all its seasons and weather conditions. These scenes form a background for much of my work although currently I am working around the theme "Old Stone" featuring many of the historic stone buildings in the Eastern Newfoundland region.

As an artist I consider myself a beginner, a student of nature and I never cease to be amazed by it. My only regret at this time is that I did not make a life-long career of painting.
