through self-instruction, workshops, and development of
techniques both in media and colour/composition.

Themes
Being a native Newfoundlander, this artist is primarily
occupied with the representation of his native province in
the various media mentioned above. Landscape/seascape
scenes from small fishing villages and rural Newfoundland
(as well as the older sections of St.John's) are depicted in
a realistic fashion, with emphasis on the colour and
lighting of the subject.
Still-life is treated in a similar manner, with subject
matter originating from everyday life in Newfoundland's past
and present: objects of everyday work, favourite traditional
dishes, etc.
Portraiture, when done by this artist, is not necessarily an
attempt to render an absolute true likeness of the subject;
rather, it is approached as a study involving that person
and their reaction to their immediate surroundings.
During the past fifteen years, this artist has been involved
with other media in addition to the oil and charcoal of his
earlier work; water colour is becoming increasingly
important, as is the copper-plate etching and mezzotint.
These etchings were initially monochromatic (black ink), but
in recent years the artist has moved towards developing a
technique involving various colours using a single etched
plate used in conjunction with multiple plates. The
mezzotint engravings are invariably multi-plate prints and
are coloured.
