Published in 1982, The Dictionary of Newfoundland English introduced the world to an incredibly rich dialect with deep roots in Ireland and the English West Country. The entries come from four categories; words that have fallen from use in other En glish-speaking areas but survive in Newfoundland; words familiar to all English speakers but here with surprising meanings; words that occur much more frequently in Newfoundland than elsewhere; and words created by Newfoundlanders themselves.
