St. John's Walking Tour

Away from the harbour to the rear of George Street you will see the concrete bunker that houses City Hall. Plenty of descriptive terms jump to mind for its current tenants, perhaps you would be interested in some Newfoundland slang and look up the meaning of the word slieveen. City Hall, Photo

The city council meetings were broadcast on the local cable channel as an alternative to Gilligan's Island until they hurt the feelings of the thin-skinned cable company owner and he pulled the plug.

Further along the same street you will see the Delta Hotel next to Cabot Place.

If you go back toward the harbour, you will find the Emma Butler Gallery on George Street and a little ways further the Newman building on the corner of Springdale Street and Water Street, the home of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council and the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
One hundred feet down Water Street is the Apothecary Hall.

Angel House Bed and Breakfast
Past the far west of Water Street is Angel House Bed and Breakfast, a gracious two-story mid-nineteenth century estate home. They offer services in English, French, Dutch, and German.
Heading East again along the Harbour Drive you will come across fishermen selling their wares in season as well as a number of the boat tours and the tourism railcar. The Tourism Railcar

There are also many river systems in St.John's and the surrounding areas that have walking trails. In Conception Bay South there is the Manuels River Trail, or try the Waterford River that spans St.John's and nearby communities.
If you are interested in Marine Dynamics feel free to take a tour of the Institute for Marine Dynamics.
