Happy Valley-Goose Bay has been a low level flight training facility for a number of governments as well as a major distribution centre for the north. In late July it is the site of the Labrador Canoe Regatta, a weekend of music, song, dance, races and food. In early March its the winter carnival with snow sculptures and more partying.

At Churchill Falls there is a modern town with services, accommodations and interesting activities and attractions. The mining towns of Labrador City and Wabush lie to the west of Churchill Falls. the largest open pit ore mining, concentrate and pelletizing operation in North America has grown since 1958. Tours of the mine are available by special arrangement. The town's first bank has become their first museum- the Height of Land Heritage Centre.
Downhill and cross-country skiing are readily at hand at the Smokey Mountain Alpine Ski Club and the Menihek Nordic Ski Club. The latter has twice hosted World Cup ski events as their facilities are so good.
