Faces and Voices of Atlantic Inshore Fisheries One sunny afternoon as Tom Roach sketched at Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, he heard a man on the warf yell to a man in a boat. "Arn?" The reply was "Narn!" Are there any? No, there aren't!
Arn? Narn! Faces and voice of Atlantic Inshore Fisheries is a visual record -- Tom did pen and ink sketches of the fishers -- and an oral record of their answers to three questions: What caused the cod crisis? How has it affected you? and What changes would you recommend? The introduction explains the groundifsh fishery and how it differs from other types of fishing.
Thomas E. Roach, a Cape Bretoner, studied classics and fine arts in the United States and Mexico. He is an associate professor of art and head of the Fine Arts Department at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
