Ben Hansen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and immigrated to Canada in 1953. He came to Memorial University in 1968, and retired as Manager of Photographic Services in 1988.

In 1981 he became Maritime Professional Photographer of the Year, and in 1990 he was awarded the title of Master of Photographic Arts.
